A number of symbols have been used to represent the concept of peace. These include the dove and olive branch, the symbol of the British nuclear disarmament movement (commonly called the peace sign or peace symbol), the broken rifle, and the lion and the lamb.
The peace sign or V sign "is a hand gesture, palm outwards, with the index and middle fingers open and all others closed." Legend has it that the gesture was used by archers as far back as the 1400s. During World War II, this gesture was used to represent the letter "V" for "victory." During the 1960s, activists in the United States who were opposed to the Vietnam war "adopted the gesture as a sign of peace." It then became associated with the hippie movement.
Did you know? The V sign hasn't always had its current meaning. In American Sign Language, it indicates the number 2 or the letter "V". In parts of Asia, it is associated with cuteness, and, therefore, is often seen in selfies and other photos. In certain nations, it can be an offensive gesture, especially if the palm is facing the signer.

Peace signs are commonly seen on bumper stickers, t-shirts, and other accessories. A colorful frog waving a peace sign is the official logo of the Peace Frogs apparel company. The peace sign is also an emoji (Unicode U+270C) on most devices.
